The 37 Connectors

The 37 Connectors appears above “MGB Reaches Thermo Fisher Through 37 Documented Relationships” in white text on a black title card.

·

The public record binds the Mass General Brigham (MGB) institutional family and the Thermo Fisher Scientific (Thermo Fisher) corporate family across thirty-seven separately indexed connector records or relationship families. The connections travel through licenses, biological material, joint research, product-development input, disclosed purchasing, installed platforms, federal pass-through awards, clinical trials, sponsored research, royalties, commercialization services, sponsorship, and institutional promotion. The matrix divides that record into a corporate-umbrella registry and a connector ledger; together, the two tables preserve the legal entity, period, acquisition posture, evidence class, documented connector, proof limit, and source trail for every row.1

This companion post carries the complete evidentiary ledger behind “Dogs of MGB”; it doesn’t convert thirty-seven rows into thirty-seven contracts, payments, conflicts, current relationships, or Board-approved matters.

The recurrence is the evidence; the restraint is part of the record.

What This Counts

The matrix admits a connector when a primary, official, institutional, or counterparty record places one entity from each family inside the same transaction, agreement, license, payment, product workflow, sponsored study, clinical-trial infrastructure, service arrangement, or institutional promotion. The matrix excludes routine methods-section mentions of generic reagents, consumables, or catalog items. A separate row requires an institutional record, a counterparty record, a named program or platform, a formal relationship, or another fact above routine laboratory use.

The evidence classes carry separate loads. The “A” class establishes a transaction, agreement, license, payment, selected product, or named collaborator. The “B” class establishes operational use, a shared program, or product-development input without necessarily establishing a contract. The “C” class establishes sponsorship, marketing, education, or portfolio adjacency as context rather than procurement proof. A slash joins two classes when one connector crosses the evidentiary boundary.

The count admits one underlying relationship family once; payment direction remains descriptive rather than controlling admission, while the acquisition gate marks every pre-acquisition connector as later acquired without making Thermo Fisher Scientific (Thermo Fisher) a historical party merely because Thermo Fisher later bought the company.

The Corporate Umbrellas

Corporate Lineage, Institutional Identity, and Acquisition Timing Across Twenty-Five Registry Entries

The registry traces the Thermo Fisher Scientific (Thermo Fisher) corporate family through seven postures: predecessors, subsidiaries, acquired businesses, product families, distribution channels, divested product history, and screened names. The same registry preserves seven identities across the Mass General Brigham (MGB) institutional family: a renamed system parent, member hospitals, legal corporate entities, research programs, clinical centers, operational units, and a venture arm. The table keeps every name, posture, and timing rule intact.2

Mass General Brigham (MGB) and Thermo Fisher Scientific (Thermo Fisher) anchor the registry’s four control columns: “Side” fixes the applicable umbrella; “Entity or brand” preserves the name carried by the public record; “Umbrella posture” states the documented relationship to MGB or Thermo Fisher; “Timing rule” prevents a later acquisition, divestiture, or renaming from recasting an earlier connector, while the rows follow corporate lineage inside Thermo Fisher, institutional hierarchy inside MGB, and acquisition dates among comparable current branches before sending former, divested, or screened Thermo Fisher entries to the end.

The registry carries twenty-five data rows: eighteen on the Thermo Fisher Scientific (Thermo Fisher) side and seven on the Mass General Brigham (MGB) side. Thermo Fisher anchors the corporate family through its current Form 10-K and subsidiary exhibit, while MGB’s member page and system history anchor the institutional family. The registry preserves related names without converting them into the same legal person; the row order keeps corporate branches together, sequences comparable acquisitions by date, and isolates former, divested, or screened names at the end of the Thermo Fisher block.

The Connector Ledger

Chronology, Evidence Classes, and Proof Limits Across Thirty-Seven Records

The ledger below carries every admitted connector and its matching proof limit. The “Number” column orders the records by the earliest relationship date that the public record supports; the “Class” column applies the “A”, “B”, and “C” distinctions from the admission rule. The final column states the conclusion that remains beyond each row’s proof.

The Connector Ledger carries two control columns: “Number” places the thirty-seven connectors into chronological bands keyed to the earliest relationship date that the public record supports, moves upper-bound records immediately before their boundary year, uses the first year of a span, orders comparable month-specific records within a band, sends undated current pages to the 2026 review group, and retains the former index when the public record can’t resolve a tie; “Class” maps evidentiary load through “A”, which marks a transaction, agreement, license, payment, selected product, or named collaborator; “B” marks operational use, a shared program, or product-development input without necessarily establishing a contract; “C” marks sponsorship, marketing, education, or portfolio adjacency without establishing procurement, while a slash joins two classes when one connector crosses the evidentiary boundary.

The rows are data points, not interchangeable units. The count establishes recurrence across more than twenty-five years without creating a cumulative money flow. The count establishes neither thirty-seven contracts nor thirty-seven matters handled by the same governance body.

Four Directions Converge

The first direction carries science from the Mass General Brigham (MGB) institutional family into products and services from the Thermo Fisher Scientific (Thermo Fisher) corporate family through ProQuest licensing, Interaction Trap licensing, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) biological material, Biomarker Research Initiatives in Mass Spectrometry (BRIMS) feedback, Olink collaborations, Axiom design input, and ExoTRU commercialization.

The second direction carries products and services from the Thermo Fisher Scientific (Thermo Fisher) corporate family into operations across the Mass General Brigham (MGB) institutional family through disclosed purchasing, installed platforms, selected products, research-core equipment, clinical workflows, distribution channels, and the preferred-provider agreement.

The third direction joins the Mass General Brigham (MGB) institutional family and the Thermo Fisher Scientific (Thermo Fisher) corporate family inside federal and clinical-research infrastructure through Fisher BioServices, PPD pass-through awards and linked trials, the National Cancer Institute Molecular Analysis for Therapy Choice (NCI-MATCH), ProSAVE, and sponsorship of the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard (MRCT Center).

The fourth direction returns value, access, or visibility from the Mass General Brigham (MGB) institutional family toward the Thermo Fisher Scientific (Thermo Fisher) corporate family through Life Technologies royalties, ExoTRU, Lyndra’s service arrangement, research awards, forum appearances, sponsorships, and clinician-facing content.

The four directions classify movement rather than isolate rows. A single connector can cross more than one direction when the record carries science, products, money, access, or visibility through the same route. The complete pattern converges into recurrence without collapsing into one contract, one payment stream, one commercial loop, one governance route, or one decision-maker.

Names Stay Separate

The seven distinctions below prevent the umbrella method from laundering a related entity into a contracting party.

  • Bio-Techne Corporation occupied the corporate middle of the ExoTRU route through its Exosome Diagnostics brand; the record converts neither name into Thermo Fisher Scientific or Mass General Brigham.
  • Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard University, and Johns Hopkins University remain collaborators or co-licensors rather than subsidiaries of Mass General Brigham.
  • Epredia has belonged to PHC Holdings Corporation since the June 2019 divestiture; its Arcos lineage carries former ownership by Thermo Fisher Scientific, while Fisher Healthcare supplies the current channel within that corporate family.
  • Gulf Scientific Corporation appears only in the screened research trail as an independent regional partner or distributor of Thermo Fisher Scientific; Gulf Scientific enters neither the corporate umbrella registry nor the thirty-seven-connector count.
  • Lyndra Therapeutics remains linked to Mass General Brigham Ventures rather than becoming a subsidiary of Mass General Brigham (MGB) or an asset of the MGB ERISA Master Trust.
  • The Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard remains a joint center rather than the Mass General Brigham parent.
  • Thermo Fisher Scientific can bring a relationship into today’s corporate umbrella through a later acquisition without becoming the historical selecting, negotiating, or governing party.

The row survives only when its names survive.

The Governance Gate

Mass General Brigham (MGB) routes ordinary goods-and-services contracts through Mass General Brigham Supply Chain, funded clinical-research agreements from for-profit entities through the Clinical Trials Office (CTO), funded nonclinical research agreements from for-profit entities and invention-commercialization services through Mass General Brigham Innovation, and designated industry-interaction matters through the Office for Interaction with Industry (OII). The routing record assigns separate institutional lanes to Supply Chain, the CTO, MGB Innovation, and the OII; it supplies no connector-specific assignment to the Board Investment Committee (BIC). Within MGB, the public record leaves the BIC as a governance question rather than a documented connector route.40

Within Mass General Brigham (MGB), the Board of Directors bears responsibility for selecting professional managers that assist the MGB ERISA Master Trust. MGB’s audited financial statements separately assign pension oversight and external-manager selection to the Board Investment Committee (BIC). Those duties connect this matrix to “Dogs of MGB” through Board authority and public-record opacity surrounding the BIC rather than an invented claim that the BIC handled laboratory procurement, licenses, research agreements, or clinical platforms.41

Mass General Brigham (MGB) should identify any office or governance body that approved, reviewed, priced, routed, monitored, licensed, or accepted each connector within MGB’s control, state when no review occurred, and publish every surviving conflict, recusal, fairness, approval, and no-review record.

The Source Record

A public footnote attaches to the claim location it documents; the note combines sources only when those sources jointly support that claim. The source ledger preserves a request for the following records; the reviewed public trail hasn’t supplied the requested records. The list frames a disclosure request rather than a finding about conduct.⁴²42

  • The requested acquired-company records include Board rosters for Affymetrix, Inc., Applied Biosystems Inc., B.R.A.H.M.S. AG, FEI Company, Invitrogen Corporation, Life Technologies Corporation, Olink Holding AB (publ), One Lambda, Inc., Patheon N.V., PPD, Inc., and The Binding Site Group.
  • Biomarker Research Initiatives in Mass Spectrometry, ExoTRU, the Fisher Scientific preferred-provider agreement, Life Technologies Corporation licenses, Patheon service agreements, service agreements involving PPD, Inc., and ProSAVE agreements and amendments.
  • Board Investment Committee records for Mass General Brigham (MGB), including the current charter, membership, delegations, minutes, external-manager selection records, external-manager fee records, conflict records, recusal records, and any direct or indirect Thermo Fisher Scientific exposure inside the MGB ERISA Master Trust.
  • The competitive-selection record set includes files, category awards, group-purchasing or distributor agreements, value-analysis records, vendor scorecards, price benchmarks, and product-mix data.
  • The conflict record set includes questionnaires, disclosure records, related-party reviews, recusals, independent-fairness findings, approval memoranda, and minutes that identify the actual governance body.
  • The intellectual-property record set includes ownership, consideration, royalty formulas, revenue sharing, termination rights, commercialization milestones, and value allocation.
  • The vendor record set includes vendor-master records, purchase orders, invoices, rebates, credits, warranties, maintenance agreements, leases, software, cloud, data-hosting, validation, and service records.

The matrix can grow only when a new public record clears the same admission rule, and its limits remain part of its evidence until that record arrives.

My Arguments Continue

My essays may appear more than once in a day, and I don’t want a busy stretch of my writing to become an irritating stretch of your email. WordPress.com lets each subscriber choose Instantly, Daily, or Weekly delivery. I recommend Weekly because one digest keeps my arguments together without crowding your inbox. I rarely recommend Instantly; my publication won’t manufacture your urgency. I want long-term readers, and my subscription offer has to continue to earn that enduring relationship through my editorial restraint.
